Dual Credit Courses

What is AP and Dual Credit?

Dual Credit
Dual credit courses allow high school students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Dual credit gives students a chance to experience college-level coursework while saving time and money by completing credits before graduating high school.

AP (Advanced Placement)
AP courses are rigorous, college-level classes offered in high school. At the end of the course, students take an optional national AP exam. College credit is granted based on the exam score and the policies of the college or university the student attends. AP courses are designed to challenge students academically and prepare them for higher-level learning.

👉 The key difference:

  • Dual Credit = credit is earned when the student passes the class.

  • AP = credit depends on the exam score and the college’s policy.

Below are all the dual credit and AP courses offered at Skyview!

Dual Credit/AP at SHS

  • In Idaho, a GEM (General Education Matriculation) certificate is awarded for completing a set of transferable general education courses at a state-supported higher education institution. To fulfill the GEM requirements, a student must take courses across six core competency areas, though the exact credits vary depending on the degree.

    GEM competency areas

You can find the list of approved GEM courses on the official Idaho Course Transfer website. The six competency areas are:

    • GEM 1: Written Communication (minimum 6 credits for an AA, AS, or BAS degree)
    • GEM 2: Oral Communication (minimum 2 credits)
    • GEM 3: Mathematical Ways of Knowing (minimum 3 credits)
    • GEM 4: Scientific Ways of Knowing (minimum 7 credits, with a lab component)
    • GEM 5: Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing (minimum 6 credits, from two different disciplines)
    • GEM 6: Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing (minimum 6 credits, from two different disciplines)
