Student Leadership Information

Below are the descriptions of student leadership positions for the Band program.

Auditioned Positions

                Students that have completed at least one year in band at Skyview can audition for this role.  Auditions start the first rehearsal of your high school band career.  Formal audition materials, dates, and expectations will be posted in March.  Executive Drum Majors are the section leader for the Drum Major section.

 

  • Perform the National Anthem at special events
  • Run Drum Major Sectionals when there is no Drum Major staff present
  • Arrive to rehearsals 30 minutes early to set up
  • Take on teaching responsibilities for small groups or sections if a section leader is absent
  • Run metronome and tuner during rehearsals
  • Make connections with members of the band
  • Move drum major equipment, and other equipment
  • Lead stretches and warm ups
  • Help set drill
  • Conduct the band at marching band rehearsals/football games/competitions/pep band
  • Check Section leaders off on music (Must be able to read music)
  • Plan and gather supplies for battle of the sections
  • Assist the Band director/staff as needed
  • If needed, help students who are struggling with music/marching
  • Be an example of positive attitude, behaviors, and leadership
  • Help get everything off the field
  • Assist uniform manager with uniforms

Students that have completed at least one year in band can apply for a leadership position. 

Student Leaders are expected to…

 

  • Perform the National Anthem at special events
  • Engage in recruitment activities in the spring semester for the following fall season
  • Arrive 30 minutes early to set up for rehearsal
  • Hold weekly sectionals (one sectional a week minimum)
  • Help section members memorize music
  • Keep track of your section binder
  • Check section members off on music memorization
  • Set the tone for your section during rehearsals (your attitude affects your section)
  • Help section members who are struggling with music/marching
  • Be good examples of positive attitudes, behaviors, and leadership
  • Help get everything off the field
  • Lead their section when the director is working with another group
  • Keep their section aware of upcoming performances
  • Remind their section on good rehearsal etiquette
  • Be able to model parts of the music for their section
  • Assist with the construction and tear-down of equipment
Application/Interview Positions
  • Collect attendance for rehearsals from section leaders
  • File music in its correct space
  • Manage and upkeep the digital library (excel)
  • Help organize, pass out, and collect music
  • Help keep the music library clean and organized
  • Keep Record of Uniforms
  • Lead Uniform Check Out/In
  • Remedy Uniform Malfunctions or Issues
  • Be good examples of positive attitudes, behaviors, and leadership
  • Prepare Uniforms for Dry Cleaning in Spring
  • Keep Record of Uniforms

  • Lead the Loading and Unloading Process for all events
  • Create team of students to assist with Loading/Unloading process
Elected Positions
This position is an elected position within the bands.
  • Make connections with members of the band (know everyone's name)
  • Run band council meetings
  • Assist the band director/staff as needed
  • Help with Band Banquet
  • Plan band activities (movie nights, parties, etc.)
  • Help with recruitment at the middle school
  • Lead Band in Pre-Performance Traditions
  • Be good examples of positive attitudes, behaviors, and leadership
  • If secretary and vice president are not present, take attendance
  • Help get everything off the field
  • Assist uniform manager with uniforms
  • Manage social media accounts
  • Be a person that band members can come to with problems relating to band or school
  • Create a varied and diverse council of students that are not in student leadership to find ways to support the band through committees
  • Assist President in the above responsibilities
  • Be good examples of positive attitudes, behaviors, and leadership
  • When secretary is not present, take attendance
  • Help get everything off the field
  • Assist uniform manager with uniforms
  • Be a person that band members can come to with problems relating to band or school
